Analytical modeling of a multilayer, multimorph lithium-ion battery actuator

Silicon-anode based lithium-ion batteries can provide large actuation strain and actuator energy through their novel electrochemical mechanism. Battery actuators have strong potential as multifunctional due to ability store energy, actuate, self-sense. This paper presents a generic multilayer model that predict the following metrics for multimorph: free deflection, blocked force, energy. Two case studies are explored including an experimentally validated study with 13-layer multimorph 33-layer multimorph. These investigated range of coating layer thicknesses two prevailing assumptions. The first assumes perfect bonding all layers within multimorph, second is method where some interfaces in assumed be slip. Results under assumption indicate stiffer performs better than force per active material volume. deflection its larger compliance.
